The new version of Chiffres clés Campus France, published in February 2017, gives access in a single document to all the data on student mobility in the world as well as in France.

Highlights include:

  • The number of internationally mobile students has doubled in twelve years, reaching 4.3 million in 2014. France, the leading non-English-speaking destination, ranks4th among host countries behind the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia (source UNESCO).
  • The number of Erasmus mobility students has increased by 53% in 5 years, and by 7% in 1 year. France has lost two places in 5 years, falling back to4th position among Erasmus mobility countries, behind Spain, Germany and the UK. Conversely, France has moved up to first place among countries of origin, just ahead of Germany (source: European Commission).
  • The number of foreign students in France has risen by 8.7% in 5 years, reaching 309,642 at the start of the 2015-2016 academic year, a steady but slower increase than global mobility. Growth in the number of foreign students in France is more marked in grandes écoles and non-university courses (+26.6% in 5 years) than in universities (+3.2%). The leading region of origin for mobile foreign students in France is North Africa (23%), followed by Sub-Saharan Africa and the European Union (both 20%), then Asia-Oceania (17%). There has been a slight decline in the number of Chinese students, and a marked increase in the number of Italian and Ivorian students (source MENESR ).
  • The number of French students on degree-granting mobility programs has been rising steadily since 2008, reaching 78,758 in 2014, an increase of 31% in 3 years (source UNESCO).
