"My thesis in 180 seconds": three women win prizes
2017 saw a victory for African women
Doctoral student Marielle Yasmine Agbahoungbata won the international final of "Ma thèse en 180 secondes", a popular science competition, on September 28. This 4th edition 2017, which took place in Liège, Belgium, was not only largely dominated by Africa but also by women (15 candidates out of 20 in total). The winner, from Benin, presented a thesis on wastewater.
This year's event saw a sharp rise in the number of countries represented: from 10 last year to 15 this year, including 7 from Africa. Women accounted for 3 of the 5 winners, with Marielle Yasmine Agbahoungbata winning first prize and Sabrina Fadloun, from the Communauté Université Grenoble Alpes, who won the French final with her "long jump team" of electrons "trained by Usain Bolt". Third prize went to Sarah Olivier from the University of Geneva (Switzerland). The title of her thesis: La Mémoire mérovingienne au travers de ses réécritures.
