
EDF wins concession for Nachtigal dam
One of the solutions for reducing Cameroon's energy deficit
The Nachtigal mega hydroelectric project led by the French group EDF and designed to significantly reduce Cameroon's energy deficit, is proceeding smoothly. The Minister of Water and Energy, Basile Atangana Kouna, and the Managing Director of Nachtigal Hydro Power Company (NHPC), Olivier Flambard, signed the Concession Agreement in Yaoundé on Thursday, April 20, 2017. Yaoundé, the Electricity Generation Concession Agreement, marking another decisive step in the implementation of this project.
NHPC was created in July 2016 by a consortium led by EDF, and the Cameroonian state with the aim of operating the 420 MW hydroelectric dam currently under construction on the Sanaga River 65 km from Yaoudé. Owned 40% by EDF International, 30% by the government and 30% by the International Finance Corporation (IFC), it was awarded the contract last week by Cameroon's Minister of Energy.Energie camerounais, the concession to operate the Nachtigal hydroelectric scheme for a period of 35 years, and now has land rights on the site of the hydroelectric facility.
